Anodized vs. Painted vs. Engraved: Why Your Can's Finish Matters

Every custom metal can on the market gets its appearance one of four ways. They cost different amounts, they look different, and — the part nobody mentions — they age very differently.

Here's what's actually happening to the metal in each case.

Painting and powder coating: a layer on top

Paint and powder coat both work the same way conceptually. You take bare aluminum and you put a layer of colored material on the outside of it. Powder coating is the tougher of the two — electrostatically applied and heat-cured, which gets you a thicker and more resilient shell than wet paint.

Both share the same structural fact: there is a layer sitting on top of your metal. Layers have edges, and edges are where failure starts. Drop the can on concrete and the impact point chips down to raw aluminum. Rub it against keys for six months and the high spots wear through first. It's not a manufacturing defect. It's what "a coating" means.

Anodizing: color inside the metal

Anodizing isn't a coating at all. It's an electrochemical process that converts the outer surface of the aluminum itself into a hard, porous aluminum oxide layer — and then color is drawn into those pores and sealed in.

The critical difference: the color isn't on the aluminum, it's in it. There's no layer to chip off, because there's no separate layer.

The oxide layer is also substantially harder than the aluminum underneath it, so an anodized can resists scratching better than a bare or painted one. This is the same process used on aircraft components, high-end cookware, and the phone in your pocket — not because it looks nice, though it does, but because it survives.

Trade-off worth stating: anodizing is a dyeing process, so it works within a range of colors and can't reproduce a photograph. Which brings us to the lid.

Laser engraving: removal, not addition

Laser engraving burns away or discolors the surface to create a mark. It's genuinely permanent — you're not going to rub off something that's been carved into metal.

But it comes with a hard constraint that defines almost every custom can on the market today: engraving is monochrome. You get one tone — the color of the burned or exposed metal — against whatever the surface color is. Photographs become high-contrast outlines. Logos lose everything except their silhouette. Gradients don't exist.

The industry standardized on engraving because it's fast and cheap. The result is that most custom cans look like variations on the same idea: a scratched-in outline on a plain body.

That's fine if your design is a clean single-color mark. It's a real loss if you wanted a picture of your dog.

UV printing: actual full color

UV printing lays down ink and cures it instantly with ultraviolet light. Because the ink sets on contact rather than soaking in and slowly drying, it sits crisply on hard surfaces like metal, and it prints in genuine CMYK — the full color range, gradients, photographic detail, and all.

Practically speaking: with UV printing, a photograph is a photograph. A team logo has its real colors. A memorial portrait actually looks like the person.

How to make yours last

  • Wipe it, don't scrub it. Damp cloth, dry it off. Abrasive pads are how you sand a finish.
  • Skip harsh solvents. Acetone, strong degreasers, and bleach are unkind to printed surfaces.
  • Don't share a pocket with keys. The single most common source of wear on any carried metal object.
  • Keep it out of the dishwasher. Heat plus caustic detergent is the worst combination for any finish.

Treated normally, a properly anodized and UV-printed can will look the same in three years as it does the day it arrives. That's the point of building it this way.
